When was the last time you replaced these?

Hi Reader,

I ran a little poll in my Instagram stories today, and discovered that most people don't buy new spices until they run out of them. Honestly, I don't either.

But how long does it take for you to use up your spices?

It's something to think about, since knowing when to replace them can make a big difference in your cooking.

I go through ground cinnamon and smoked sweet paprika pretty quickly, but there are some spices, like ground ginger and ground cardamom, that are seldom used.

I know that spices don't last forever, but even with creating recipes for a living, it's not something that I usually think about.

I noticed while I was working on a couple of new spice blend recipes recently that ground spices lose about half their intensity within six months of opening!

Unlike other ingredients, ground spices rarely go rancid. But they do lose their potency over time. Which isn't a HUGE deal, because you can just add more to get a similar result.

But if you have spices that are more than 2 years old, or maybe haven't been stored in a cool, dark place, give them a sniff! If they don't smell like anything, or smell kind of funky, it's time to replace them.

I had to buy new ground ginger for this week's recipe. It's my homemade pumpkin spice blend, which you can throw together in a pinch if you're out of store-bought pumpkin spice.

I hope this recipe comes in handy!

A hand holding a crisp plain potato chip topped with a piece of smoked salmon, a dollop of creme fraiche, and a fresh chive.

Hi Reader, As we get ready to welcome the new year, I wanted to share two easy little treats you can make for New Year’s Eve. The sparkling cranberry punch is festive, refreshing, and alcohol-free. You can make most of it ahead of time, just wait to add the ginger ale until you’re ready to serve. And the potato chip canapés are one of my favourite low-effort appetizers: crisp, salty chips topped with smoked salmon, a little creaminess, and fresh herbs. I imagine they’d be good with champagne,...

A clear glass of frothy eggless eggnog on a fancy coaster.

Hi Reader, My idea of a little treat is a cozy, warm drink. Usually, it's tea that gets me through the workday, but now that I'm taking some time off (FINALLY!), all I want are warm holiday beverages. This week I’m sharing two of my go-to holiday drinks:eggless eggnog (which is non-alcoholic) and my spiced hot chocolate. The eggnog is creamy and lightly spiced without being too sweet, and it comes together in just a few minutes. I love to drink this warm, but it's great cold, too. The hot...
